What Affects Labor Pricing

Terrain

  • Flat lot: standard pricing
  • Slopes: add 20-40% for stepped or racked panels
  • Rocky soil: add 30-50% or more (auger won't cut it — you need a jackhammer)
  • Tree roots: add time for rerouting or root cutting

Access

  • Wide open backyard: standard
  • Narrow side yards: slower, add 10-20%
  • No truck access: materials carried by hand, add 15-25%

Removal

Old fence removal: $3-8/linear foot. Always quote it separately.

Gates

  • Single walk gate (3-4ft): $150-300 labor
  • Double drive gate (10-12ft): $300-600 labor
  • Sliding gate: $500-1,200 labor (track + hardware)

How to Calculate Your Labor Rate

If you're a contractor setting your prices:

Target Annual Income ÷ Billable Hours = Your Hourly Rate

Example: $120,000 ÷ 1,800 hours = $66.67/hour

Then convert to per-foot: if you install 100 linear feet of wood privacy per day (8 hours), that's:

  • $533/day ÷ 100 ft = $5.33/ft in pure labor
  • Add helper: $200/day ÷ 100 ft = $2/ft
  • Total crew labor: $7.33/ft

You charge $12-18/ft, the rest covers overhead, insurance, truck, tools, and profit.

Regional Variations

Labor rates vary significantly by region:

RegionAdjustment
Northeast (NY, NJ, CT)+20-40%
West Coast (CA, WA)+15-30%
Southeast (FL, GA, NC)Base rate
Midwest (OH, IN, MI)-5-10%
TexasBase rate to +10%
Rural areas-10-20%
